Playing rummy is simple, easy and a lot of fun! The objective of Rummy is to win - by forming sequences and sets with the thirteen cards you are dealt and making a valid declaration before your opponents. As per the rummy rules, at least one pure sequence needs to be made along with another impure sequence and sets. An invalid declaration makes you immediately lose the match. So, it’s crucial that you know the basic rules of rummy and the different terms that are associated with it.

Here are some of the basic rules of Indian rummy that you must know:

  1. As per Indian Rummy rules, the game is played between 2 to 6 players with one or two standard decks of cards (depending on the players at the table) along the printed joker cards.
  2. Thirteen cards are dealt to each player at the start of the game. The remaining cards are kept face down on the table (closed deck) with the top card placed face up (this becomes the discard pile/open deck).
  3. One random card from the deck is selected as the Wild Joker. All cards of that same face value can also be used as Wild Jokers.
  4. Players pick one card from the closed or open deck and discard one card to the discard pile.
  5. According to the rummy rules, players need to arrange all the cards in their hand to form at least one pure sequence and other valid sequences/sets.
  6. Once a player has at least one pure sequence and other valid sequence/sets by grouping their 13 cards, they need to make a declaration.
  7. The first player to make a valid declaration wins the game!

13 Card Rummy (Indian Rummy) is a cross between Gin Rummy and 500 Rummy. Indian Rummy is played by 2 to 6 players and is the most popular type of rummy that is played in the Indian subcontinent, enjoyed mostly at family gatherings or kitty parties, and especially during Diwali. For 2 players a standard deck of 52 cards is selected and for 6 players two decks of 52 cards are combined. To win, players must form sets or sequences (with at least one pure and one impure sequence) and make a valid declaration. The three most widely played 13 Card Rummy are:

  1. Points Rummy
  2. Deals Rummy
  3. Pool Rummy

In Indian Rummy (Points, Deals and Pool) players are dealt 13 cards each at the beginning of the round.

A sequence or run is a combination of three or more cards of the same suit. Sequences can be either pure (7♠️, 8♠️, 9♠️) or impure (7♠️, 8♠️, Joker).

A set is a combination of three or more cards of the same value but of different suits (6♠️, 6♥️, 6♦️). A joker/wild joker can be used to make a set (6♠️, 6♥️, Joker).

Rummy is a game of skill and not a game of chance as declared by the Hon'ble. Supreme Court of India in 1968. Hence, online rummy is absolutely legal to play for free or cash.

A, K, Q, J has 10 points. Other cards (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10) are equal to their face value.

After a round ends, losing players are penalised according to the summed up value of their unmatched cards (deadwood).

Indian Rummy differs from Gin Rummy in a lot of ways. Most importantly, in Indian Rummy 13 cards are dealt to players while in Gin Rummy 10 cards are dealt to the players. Also, Indian Rummy is played between 2-6 players while Gin Rummy is played between 2 players.

In Indian Rummy, an Aces (A) is worth 10 points.

During a player’s turn. he/she must pick a card from the top of the open or closed deck and discard one card from his hand to the discard pile (open deck).

The objective of Rummy is to win - by forming sequences and sets with the thirteen cards you are dealt and making a valid declaration before your opponents. As per the rummy rules, at least one pure sequence needs to be made along with another impure sequence and sets.

When playing Rummy on a credible platform like RummyBo, it is completely safe for you to register to play online rummy. We have the best RNG algorithm (random number generator) that guarantees fair play.

There are various theories as to where the name ‘rummy’ came from. Some believe the word 'rummy' comes from the word 'rum' which was a slang in Great Britain that meant odd, peculiar, strange or queer while others believe the word originated from Rum, the popular alcoholic beverage. There is also another theory that rummy comes from Whiskey Poker which eventually came to be known as Rum Poker and finally became simply Rummy.

Full count is the maximum possible points that can be scored by a player in a game (irrespective of the total value of cards in their hand).

The Joker card, also called the “Trump card”, can be used to replace any card to form an impure sequence or a set. Joker cards cannot be used twice in a single meld (two jokers cannot be placed next to each other).

No, you cannot pick up the whole discard pile. During your turn, you can only pick the top card from the discard pile (open deck).

Though there are over 40 types of Rummy Variants, the three main types of rummy played all over the word are - 13 Card Rummy, 21 Card Rummy and Gin Rummy.

TDS Policies

Starting from April 1, 2023, online gaming platforms will be subject to new tax regulations approved by the Indian government. According to the new Finance Act, 2023, online gaming platforms must deduct tax at source (TDS) either at the time of withdrawal or at the end of the financial year. The TDS rate will be 30% of a player's net winnings, which means the sum of all winnings minus the total entry fee paid by the player in the year. This tax will only apply to the extent that the net winnings are withdrawn.

'Net winnings in a game' means the total amount won by the user in a game minus the total entry/joining fee paid in that game. 'Net winnings' in any period means the sum of net winnings in all games played in that period.

TDS is calculated as 30% of the net winnings, but only if the net winnings are greater than zero. If the net winnings are negative, there will be no TDS deducted. So, if the net winnings are ₹1,000, then the TDS deducted will be ₹300, which is 30% of the net winnings.

No, you will not be required to pay TDS at the end of a cash game or tournament, even if you win more than ₹10,000. However, please note that your winnings will be considered for the calculation of net winnings, and TDS will be applied when you withdraw your winnings, according to the new policy.

In the event that your net winnings reduce or become negative at the end of the financial year, you may file your tax returns and claim refunds from the income tax department based on your overall tax liability. It's important to note that you should consult with a tax adviser for more information on this process. RummyBo will provide TDS certificate(s) that you can use to file your tax returns. However, please be aware that RummyBo will not refund any excess TDS to players.

No TDS will be deducted on any withdrawals made until 31st March 2023. Any balance in your account on 31st March 2023 will be carried forward to the following day. However, please note that for any withdrawals made on or after 1st April 2023, TDS will be calculated based on the net winnings from the games played starting from 1st April 2023 onwards.

To initiate a withdrawal, it is mandatory to finish your KYC, which includes verifying your Aadhaar Card and PAN details. Please complete your KYC verification before placing a withdrawal request.

TDS will only be applicable on redemptions where you have positive net winnings that have not been taxed yet. The amount of TDS deduction depends solely on your net winnings. If you have paid TDS in previous withdrawals, then no TDS is applicable on withdrawals till your net winnings exceed the amount for which you have already paid TDS.

TDS is only applicable if you have positive net winnings. If TDS was not deducted on a previous withdrawal, it's possible that you didn't have positive net winnings at the time. Please check your account summary to confirm your net winnings for both withdrawals.
