What is Deals Rummy?

Deals Rummy is a unique variant of rummy game where the players play for a fixed number of deals. Each deal is considered a round and the player with the lowest points at the end of all the rounds is declared the winner. Played by two players with a standard deck of cards, the objective is to form sets and sequences of cards and lay down all your cards as quickly as possible and have the lowest score after the conclusion of the pre-decided number of deals. The score of the losing player is calculated based on the number of unmatched cards.

In Deals Rummy, the cards in each suit (spades ♠️, hearts ♥️, diamonds ♦️ and clubs ♣️) rank low to high starting with Ace (A), 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack (J), Queen (Q) and finally King (K). Ace, King, Queen and Jack each hold 10 points. The other remaining cards have value equal to their face value. E.g, 7 will hold 7 points, 9 will hold 9 points and so on.

Types of Deals Rummy

At RummyBo, and most other online rummy sites, there are two popular types of Deals that are played:

  1. Best of 2 Deals
  2. Best of 3 Deals

Best of 2 Deals

Best of 2 Deals is played between two players and is played for two deals (rounds). After two deals, the points are calculated and the player with the lowest score at the end of the game wins. The score of the losing player is calculated based on the number of unmatched cards.

Example: Ajay and Bijay are playing a best of 2 deals rummy game. Ajay wins the first deal and Bijay gets a penalty of 20 points. In the next deal, Bijay wins the round and Ajay gets a penalty of 15 points. So, after two deals, the score is Ajay (15 points) and Bijay (20 points) - hence Ajay is declared the winner.

Best of 3 Deals

Best of 2 Deals is played between two players and is played for three deals (rounds). After three deals, the points are calculated and the player with the lowest score at the end of the game wins. The score of the losing player is calculated based on the number of unmatched cards.

Example: Ajay & Bijay are playing a best of 3 deals rummy game. Ajay wins the first deal and Bijay gets a penalty of 15. Bijay wins the second deal and Ajay gets a penalty of 10. Bijay also wins the third round but Ajay only gets a penalty of 4 points. So, Ajay has a total score of 14 points while Bijay has a score of 15 points. So, Ajay wins the deal since his score is lower after 3 deals.

Rules of Deals Rummy

Cards:

Deals Rummy is played between two players and uses one standard deck of 52 cards, including the jokers. The game is played for a predetermined number of deals.

Dealing:

The dealer distributes 13 cards to each player and places the remaining cards face down on the table as the draw pile. The top card from the draw pile is turned face-up and placed next to the draw pile to start the discard pile.

Gameplay:

The player to the left of the dealer starts the game by picking a card from the draw pile or the top card from the discard pile. The player then needs to form valid sets and sequences with the cards in hand and discard one card to the discard pile. Both players take turns to pick a card and form sets and sequences, and the game continues in a clockwise direction.

One of the most important things to remember while playing Deals Rummy is that your declaration must always consist of at least two sequences, out of which one has to be a pure sequence. Also, sets cannot have the same card with the same suit twice. E.g: the set of 8♠️-8♠️-8♣️ is invalid as it has two 8♠️.

How to Play Deals Rummy Game?

Here’s how a game of Deals Rummy is played:

  1. Deals Rummy is played between 2 players with one standard deck of cards along with printed joker cards.
  2. Each player joins a Deal Rummy table by paying a fixed entry fee. Each game has multiple deals. Best of 2 Deals have 2 deals while best of 3 deals have 3 deals.
  3. Thirteen cards are dealt to both players at the start of the game. The remaining cards are kept face down on the table (closed deck) with the top card placed face up (this becomes the discard pile/open deck).
  4. One random card from the deck is selected as the Wild Joker. All cards of that same face value can also be used as Wild Jokers.
  5. Players pick one card from the closed or open deck and discard one card to the discard pile.
  6. According to the rummy rules, players need to arrange all the cards in their hand to form at least one pure sequence and other valid sequences/sets.
  7. Once a player has at least one pure sequence and other valid sequence/sets by grouping their 13 cards, they need to make a declaration.
  8. The first player to make a valid declaration wins the deal/round.
  9. After the predetermined number of deals are completed, the points are tallied for both players.
  10. The player with the lowest score wins the game.

Can You Drop In Deals Rummy Game?

The interesting part of Deals Rummy is that unlike other 13 Card rummy variants, like Points or Pool Rummy, you cannot drop in a Deals Rummy game. Since it’s played for Best of 2 Deals or Best of 3 Deals, there is no option to drop in a game of Deals Rummy.

Tips & Tricks and How to Win at Deals Rummy

  1. If you win the first deal, you don’t need to win the second deal. Just ensure you have lesser points than what your opponent had in the last round and you’ll still end up winning!
  2. Make a pure sequence fast: Since you cannot win without a pure sequence, always try to make a pure sequence early on in the game
  3. Discard cards with high-value: Aces, Kings, Queens and Jacks are cards with high point values. Discard unmatched high cards as soon as possible to decrease the risk of losing by a big margin.
  4. Get connecting cards: Connecting cards will help you form sequences and/or sets. E.g: you can use 4🧡 with 2🧡 and 3🧡 (2🧡-3🧡-4🧡) or with 5🧡 and 6🧡 (4🧡-5🧡-6🧡).
  5. Collecting jokers: Collect jokers to replace high value cards with. Also, since jokers cannot be used to form pure sequences, use them to make other sets and sequences.
  6. Avoid the discard pile: If you can help it, try not to pick up cards from the discard pile as it gives away the kind of hand you are trying to make.
  7. Check before declaring: An invalid declaration can be the difference between winning and losing. Always check your cards before declaring.
  8. Observe your opponents: Always keep an eye on your opponent and their moves. Try to keep your options open by not committing to one particular set or sequence too early in the game.

How are Points Calculated in Deals Rummy?

The player who makes a valid declaration will get a score of zero. The losing player(s) will get penalised based on the unmatched cards in their hand. After the end of the predetermined number of deals, the points are tallied and the player with the lowest score wins.

Here’s how the winnings are calculated:
